Hi Calcagno, My sister-in-law's boyfriend, sorta, but that's another story, works in a boatyard in Alameda. He says people are walking away from their boats when they haven't paid their docking (slip) fees, etc. And that some of them are in liveaboard situations. I've always been attracted to the idea of living on a boat. I'm drawn to the water. My wife is drawn to the mountains. How's your portrait/audio recording project going? Chuck (one of your portrait subjects)
Hi Ashtabula, Sorry for not seeing this comment sooner! The portrait project went great and was in a show in SF last Fall. You can see pics at http://www.telephoneheart.com/TelephoneHeart/TelephoneHeart.html Unfortunately however I am still not living on a boat.
The first 500 letters have been published into a book. Click here for more information and to purchase.
Project Description
This is a continuous project in which I write letters to people, chosen randomly, who live in New York City, found in the white pages. These letters are unconventional, scattered thoughts, including drawings and notes/comments on life. They become a sort of diary or record of my life. These letters consist of descriptions of personal stories, dreams, goals, to-do lists, recipes, etc. With each letter I ask the recipient to respond in some way, usually asking them to tell me a story. I include a self-addressed stamped envelope for convenience. This project is both a release for me, a way to send my most personal thoughts off in a little envelope, as well as a way for me to connect with people on the other side of the continent, to physically "touch" the art-mecca of New York City.
These letters comment on the state of communication in today's culture as well. Why is the reality of recieving a hand-drawn letter in the mail so jarring? How has this lost art of letter writing become a rare, personal, and sometimes frightening way of communicating? The responses will also be posted on this site as I recieve them.
I am an artist and educator, living in San Francisco, CA. I recieved my MFA from DAAP of UC in 2007 and have been a working artist in the Bay Area since 2009. Please check out my website for more info on my art and other projects! www.telephoneheart.com
